The Winery and Vineyard

Como Villa Estate is owned by John and Pam Chapman who live on the Central Otago vineyard. As a small, family run vineyard, our wine is produced in a true boutique style. All the grapes are hand-picked and bottled locally at Alexandra Vintners Ltd, by winemaker Antony Worch.

The property was first purchased in 1982 operating as a deer farm and orchard. The old stone house had always stood on the land and was used as a workshop and implement shed. One day, when working on the tractor, a wheel collapsed into a hole behind the stone house and this led to the discovery of an old wine cellar, built by the original owner Thomas Oliver.

With Alexandra quickly becoming recognised as an ideal climate for growing grapes, we decided it was time for a new challenge and began planting grapevines.

The first vintage produced under the Como Villa Estate label was a Pinot Noir in 2006. It was entered in the Bragato Wine Awards in 2008 and was successful in achieving a bronze medal. Since then Como Villa has expanded into other varieties and offers a range of quality red and white wines.

Como Villa has restored the smithy (Black Smith Shop) that was onsite. The furnace and tooling are operational and we will be having open days where you can see the smith at work.

Trevor Sutherland is our resident blacksmith, please see our Facebook page for open days where you can call out and see the forge operating and Trevor plying his trade.
